DICK DALE  TRIBAL  THUNDER

DICK  DALE  - TRIBAL  THUNDER   2002.

Dick Dale recorded “Let’s Go Trippin’” in 1962 with a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar and Fender amp, creating a reverb sound that distinguished “Let’s Go Trippin’” as the first surf rock song. As the originator of what became known as instrumental surf music, he defined this new sound as “a heavy machine-gun staccato picking style to represent the power of Mother Nature, of our earth, of our ocean.”

“I wanted my guitar to sound like Gene Krupa’s drums.” Dales said in a 2010 Surfer magazine interview. “I never went to school and learned music theory”, Dale said, explaining the sound he was reaching for: “When I play, I go, ‘This sounds like a tiger; this sounds like a volcano; this sounds like the lip of the water coming over my head when I’m surfing.’

He died this day, March 16th, 2019 of long-standing health issues. For Babyboomers, Dick Dale is remembered for his legendary shows at the Rendezvous Ballroom (packed with wave-riders and their blonde girlfriends doing the Surfer Stomp) in Newport Beach in the early 1960s.

JULY  1968

JULY   -  FIRST  1968  re.2007.

July were a psychedelic rock band from Ealing, London, UK, that were professionally active between 1968 and 1969. They grew out of The Second Thoughts and The Tomcats (2). The band's music was a blend of psychedelic rock and psychedelic pop, marked by lush harmonies, acoustic guitars, keyboards, and intricate lead guitar work.

Although none of the band's records managed to chart in the UK or the US, July are today best remembered for their songs "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds" and "The Way", which have all been included on a number of compilation albums over the years.

July reformed in 2009 with four of the original members: Tom Newman, Pete Cook, Chris Jackson and Alan James, recording further albums.

 THE DEVIANTS

THE  DEVIANTS  - FIRST  1969 .

In the late '60s, the Deviants were something like the British equivalent to the Fugs, with touches of the Mothers of Invention and the British R&B-based rock of the Yardbirds and the Pretty Things. Their roots were not so much in the British Invasion as the psychedelic underground that began to take shape in London in 1966-1967. Not much more than amateurs when they began playing, they squeezed every last ounce of skill and imagination out of their limited instrumental and compositional resources  which combined savage social commentary, overheated sexual lust, psychedelic jamming, blues riffs, and pretty acoustic ballads.
