Sweet Home… Jacksonville?

Jacksonville has been the birthplace of many famous musicians and bands. However, Jacksonville might best be known as the "Birthplace of Southern Rock," a genre with roots of blues, jazz, soul, R&B, and rock 'n roll.

Two of Southern Rock’s architects, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band were formed in Jacksonville, paving the way for other Southern Rock bands, including local bands .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, and JJ Grey & Mofro.

Famous Musicians from Jacksonville, FL

Native sons Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns formed Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964. The inspiration for the band’s name came from a former gym teacher of two of the band members at Westside Jacksonville’s Robert E. Lee High School named Leonard Skinner who gave the members a hard time for their long hair. At the height of the band’s dominance after hits like "Sweet Home Alabama" and “Free Bird,” a devastating plane crash in 1977 prematurely ended the lives of three band members: Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.

THREE  MAN  ARMY  -  1971  A THIRD OF A LIFE TIME.

Three Man Army biography

Following hot on the heels of the demise of their former band Gun, THREE MAN ARMY was formed in 1970 by brothers Adrian Gurvitz and Paul Gurvitz. Their initial effort A Third of a Lifetime appeared on Pegasus Records the following year, featuring contributions by drummers Buddy Miles, Mike Kellie and Carmine Appice.

Tony Newman would eventually join as the permanent sticksman for the rest of the lifespan of this Britsh power trio. Mahesha would be the first production Newman appeared on, initially released in 1972, then reissued with alternate cover art in 1973 as Three Man Army. 1974 saw the trio's last attempt at achieveing fame and fortune with Three Man Army Two. But like the other productions of this band commercial success eluded them also on this occasion and the band folded around 1975.

Just over 30 years later an epilogue of sorts would appear in the shape of the album Three Man Army Three, issued by German label Revisted Records. Featuring just over 30 minutes of demo recordings planned for a rock opera (Three Days to Go), compiled and reworked by Paul Gurvitz.

JEFFERSON  AIRPLANE - 1987   2400  FULTON STR.

A few words "WORTH TO BE READ" from PAUL KATNER for my FAVORITE BAND.

We were very much a creature of our times." That's one way Paul Kantner explains the Jefferson Airplane, the group that he and Marty BaIln forged together two bng, strange decades ago. Well, yes, they were. And all of us who were alive-really alive-back then, were creatures in arms. But somehow, the Airplane were more monsters than creatures. They scared authorities and made things happen. They pushed boundaries and helped define the times. The times, of course, were the most cataclysmic decade in the history of this country, a decade that got going around 1965 and ended anywhere from 1969 ...nil to 1974 Ilkrtergatel. The Sidles was a decade of which It can truly be said: You had to be there. As Robin Williams put it: if you can remember the Sixties, you weren't really

Try and conjure up that decade, and all you come up with is a laundry list of cliches, having to do with tie-dyes, Gods' eyes, Day-Glo and posters and light shows; patchouli and incense, with the language of those days, those incredible, far-out, psychedelic, flower powered days. The times saw the escalation of civil tights activists' war on segregation, and of the United States' war on North Vietnam. In music, folk singers, Bob Dylan chief among them, led musical protests.. the flip side, There were the carefree Beatles.

in the fall of 1965, were about to get high for the first time, courtesy of some marijuana provided by one Bob Wan. Around the time of that momentous pot party in New York, a band was making its public debut in San Francisco:Jefferson Airplane, named after. mythical blues artist ("Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane") and influ-enced by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and marijuana. As such, the Airplane were no different from many of the people around them, especially a growing commu-nity of students, dropouts, artists, pacifists, post-Beat bohemians and other adrenturists who lived or hung out in a low-rent, Victorian-housed neighborhood called the HaightAshbury.
